Libra's Glyph
LIBRA ~ THE SCALES

23rd. September ~ 22nd. October

Libra marks the halfway point of the Sun’s apparent passage through the Zodiac. It is the only constellation which is not in some way animate, being represented by the Balance or Scales. The glyph for Libra is also used in mathematics, indicating ‘approximately equal to’ and thus continuing the balancing theme.

To understand the nature of Libra we should firstly consider the symbolism of the Balance and secondly this sign’s position within the Zodiac. As the seventh sign it is the natural ruler of the Seventh House. Thus it is primarily linked with one-to-one relationships and partnership matters of all descriptions.

The symbolism of the Scales finds expression in Libra’s inherent need for balance, harmony and concord. They have the ability to see both sides of every issue and possess a well developed sense of justice and fairness. Generally they loathe discord and will do virtually anything to keep the peace. They enjoy attractive, pleasant and serene surroundings and a comfortable and congenial atmosphere. They are typically agreeable, obliging, charming, easy going and sociable. Their need to interact with others leads to the instigation of social activity. Their planetary ruler Venus confers diplomacy, tact, refinement, a love of beauty and often good taste - but can also lead to extravagance and a less than serious attitude.

However, it is worthy of note that this quintessential desire for harmony and peace carries with it a downside! Firstly as they strive for popularity and the maintenance of amity, some Librans may try to be all things to all people. Hence this sign is sometimes considered to be weak and not entirely straightforward. In truth Librans can be prone to gullibility and to external influences, with indecision often cited as one of their major failings. Whilst constantly weighing up the possibilities it may be hard to choose one way or the other, thus leading to ambivalence and procrastination.

Furthermore, it sometimes becomes impossible to air even the smallest grievance for fear of rocking the boat. In this scenario the Libran may go on for some time in placatory mode, maintaining an outer appearance of calm whilst building up a vast inner reservoir of resentment. Ultimately the harmonious facade gives way to long repressed anger, subsequently leaving the Libran feeling dreadful and everyone around rather taken aback. It is actually preferable to clear the air before matters reach this stage! Minor disagreements are sometimes necessary and fear of these may cause more serious damage in the longer term.

Less commonly, there are a couple of alternative Libran expressions which are far from the glowing descriptions of the peace-loving diplomat which characterise much astrological literature. Some Librans attempt to achieve balance through constantly playing ‘Devil’s Advocate’ - always putting the opposing viewpoint. A more extreme manifestation is the individual who strives to assert his/her own identity through competition rather than co-operation, constantly testing their selfhood through rivalry and dispute. In such cases relationship matters cannot be expected to run smoothly.

In reality these apparently contradictory expressions simply reinforce the second principal Libran connotation - the importance of relationships! Whether for emotional support, as a complement to their individuality or as something to help them decide what they don’t want to do, this is usually the most important thing in their lives. These people are not loners and are at their best in partnership. This may be a close friendship or a business alliance, but ideally will be an intimate one-to-one association. Some Librans stay single after being severely hurt, or where such relationships have proved too inharmonious to countenance. Ordinarily however, this is not a natural nor recommended state for this sign.
